Controversy: Man-made Laws

Man-made laws have been a stumbling block for me ever since I refocused my life on Christ. The most notable judgement I have had to deal with was being judged for dating a girl at a young age. There were three general camps on dating. Courting only, dating after 16 and dating after 18. Well because I dated at 14 I was judged for all of them. Number one my sin was being defiant to my parents and to some extent putting the girl before God. Number two I was not currently dating anyone. Number 3 nowhere in the Bible does it say “Do not date before you are xx years of age.” Nor does it say, “Do not date, instead you must court.” I was foolish despite reading the Bible regularly I never found anything that said it was a sin yet I believed that dating was a sin. I hurt a lot of people with my foolishness. Only a few of which are reaching back out to me.

“But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, dissensions, and quarrels about the law, for they are unprofitable and worthless. As for the person who stirs up division, after warning him once and then twice, have nothing more to do with him, knowing that such a person is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

-Titus 3:9-11 (ESV)

For the moment I want to focus on the man-made laws. I’ve given one example above about dating, or dating before a certain age. I’m sure a number of people remember having cable or satellite was supposedly a sin. I’ve heard people call rap evil. I’ve heard people call metal evil. People say that playing video games is sinful. People say that not voting in the election is sinful. I have even heard that sending your kids to public school is a sin. I have found nowhere in the Bible that any of this is evil it’s just man-made legalism. I’m not going to waste time defending these because it goes against the main point in the article.

The point is that we should not be wasting time arguing about things that are not important. There are things we will have to fight for, the verse says “foolish controversies” not controversies altogether. In debating things like whether or not dating or public school are sins, which are unconfirmed to be in any part of the law, we waste time we could have been spending spreading the Gospel. The law is to be upheld according to Paul in Romans 3:31 but it is to be upheld by the individual out of love for Christ. “If you love me, you will keep my commandments.” –John 14:15 (ESV)

“So flee youthful passions and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace, along with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart. Have nothing to do with foolish, ignorant controversies; you know that they breed quarrels. And the Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to knowledge of the truth, and they may come to their senses and escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will.”

-2 Timothy 2:22-26 (ESV)
