If you Claim to be a Child of God

be Ready to be Disciplined like a Child of God

“Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid.”

Proverbs 12:1 (ESV)

This article was originally posted on my personal ministry blog in June of last year however much like my other articles is moving to FocusingOnTheMarkMinistries.

Without correction we will continually walk in circles making the same mistakes over and over and over and over again. Ecclesiastes says, “It is better for a man to hear the rebuke of the wise than to hear the song of fools.” –Ecclesiastes 7:5 (ESV) Not only that; Proverbs also says that we will lead others astray by rejecting reproof. “Whoever heeds instruction is on the path of life, but he who rejects reproof leads others astray.” –Proverbs 10:17 (ESV)

Discipline is not Legalism

Correction is yet another unpopular topic in the Christian community nowadays. Discipline and correction are both necessary to follow the Lord. Not only that but being corrected by God is a sign that he loves you. As Proverbs states, “My son, do not despise the Lord’s discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the Lord reproves him whom he loves, as a father the son in whom he delights.” –Proverbs 3:11-12 (ESV) Proverbs also says, “Whoever spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him.” –Proverbs 13:24 (ESV)  In addition to these verse it further states in Proverbs 13, “A wise son hears his father’s instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.” –Proverbs 13:1 (ESV)

Whose Child are You?

If we want to be children of God he is going to discipline us like children. There are also New Testament verses that also make this point. In the letter to Laodicea in the book of Revelation God makes the statement in verse 19, “Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline, so be zealous and repent.” –Revelation 3:19 (ESV) On a harsher note; Hebrews chapter twelve verses seven and eight say, “It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom is father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. –Hebrews 12:7-8 (ESV) We have two choices. The first is to be the wise children of God that obey his Word or we can be the scoffing illegitimate children.

“Blessed is the man whom you discipline, O Lord, and whom you teach out of your law, to give him rest from days of trouble, until a pit is dug for the wicked.”

-Psalm 94:12-13 (ESV)

“There is severe discipline for him who forsakes the way; whoever hates reproof will die.”

-Proverbs 15:10 (ESV)
